I am a mother of two and am having problems after a prolapse what can I do?

Q. Hi. Please could you tell me if the pelvic floor restoration and the vaginal tightening operations are the same kind of thing?
I am a mummy of 2, tore both times during birth but wasnt stitched. Both were large babies of 9pounds. Now 5 years on im having problems leaking when coughing, sneezing or being tickled. I cant go on the tramperline with my daughters. If i need the toliet i HAVE to go right away. I have seen a physiotheripist who referred me to a consulatant. The consulatant said i have a prolapse but wouldnt operate on it until im older!!!! Im 30 now. Its uncomfortable and when i ride my horse i can feel a bulge. Sex is completely unpleasurable which is causing problems in my marriage. Im at my wits end now as this is making me depressed. Im not sure what can be done, if anything. I have always done my pelvic floor exercises especially after child birth but my doctor told me now i have a prolapse even doing the exercises wont shift things back up to where they should be. Please help me. Also, im not sure how much i can expect to pay for the sort of surgery that can help me so if you could give me a guideline that would really help. ,

A. Thanks. I think if you are really sure you have completed your family, surgery can be done. Alternatively if you have not completed your family, when next you get pregnant, your baby may need to be delivered by Caesarean Section. The surgery to be done needs to be decided – either a Repair operation to front and back wall or together with a sling procedure for the incontinence, depending on how bad it is. Do call us, to arrange a consultation, if you feel you can have treatment in any of our locations in London, Leeds or Manchester. Cost is between £3500 – £4500, depending.

I am in extreme pain after using the loo but my doctor said nothing could be done as I plan on having more children?

Q. i am 21 years old and have been told i have a prolasped bladder. i have one child and was asked by my GP if i had finished having my family, i am not. i was told nothing could be done for me as i want to have more children, i am in extream pain after weeing and can not laugh or cough without leaking. can u give me any advice? after giving birth to my daughter i had a caphiter to drain my bladder and was wondering if that could have anything to do with my problem now?,

A. Thanks. The chances are that your pelvic floor was “damaged” during childbirth, I dont think it is the catheter you had put in, itself but having the catheter could be a reflection of difficulty in passing urine at the time. At 21 yrs, you may have to find a way of achieving a stronger pelvic floor muscle, possibly through pelvic floor exercises. If you choose to have surgery now, you may then have to have your further childbirth by Caesarean Section and the risk of it happenign is there, just because you are pregnant. If it is realy bad, you can use alternative options to surgery – like vaginal pessaries for prolapse.

Do I need surgery to sort out a vaginal prolapse?

Q. I have a problem I would like you to help me with please. I had a hysterectomy about 16 years ago, the procedure went aseemingly without hitch and I have had no problems since then. The problem is I have just had a bad chest infection and through severe coughing I have caused a vaginal prolapse. In doing so I have pushed it back and it has not come down again! Will I need an operation or can it heal itself? I am not a particularly fan of surgeries- anything from hospitals to the dentists! thanks ,

A. Thanks for your question, this is most unfortunate but can be sorted. I think you will need an operation, eventually. However it is possible for you to delay this if you want, by doing pelvic floor exercises or by using a device to hold things up. I hope this helps and wish you every success. If you have any further queries or questions please do not hesitate to contact me again. thanks again.

I am 28 y.o.and have been diagnosed with prolapse about 4 years ago

Q. Dear Dr, I am 28 y.o. and have been diagnosed with prolapse about 4 years ago, nothing was done not even advise until a gave birth to my 2nd child and prolapse got much worst,i undergo a repair of front wall of my vagina in the hope that prolapse will improve, but it s got actually worst and iam now really desprate as my cervix came out of my vagina which is causing my a lot of troubles. What will be your advise,is there any chance of another surgery?I really would like to have more children,is it possible in my condition? thank you,

A. Yes. it is possible to have children. You will need to have your cervix lifted up temporarily – or if a permanent surgery to lift up your cervix is done, then you will most likely require a Caesarean Section to deliver your next baby.
