Is it true that the risk of having an unhealthy child is greatly increased in a first cousin marriage?

Q. Hello Dr. Daniers, I want to know about first cousin marriage. I’m planning to get married to my first cousin and I have heard that the risk of having a defective baby from a first cousin marriage is high. My first cousin is from my father’s side, i.e. I’m gonna marry the son of my father’s brother. My parents believe that marriage of first cousins is acceptable if its from mother’s side and its less risky when compared to marrying a first cousin from father’s side. Is it true? I would like to know what are the treatments available to have a healthy baby from a first cousin marriage and is it possible for us to find out weaknesses in our DNA and predict if we gonna have a healthy child or not? Please be kind enough to send me a reply at your earliest.
thank you,
jane ,

A. Thanks. Yes there are several condition that can be checked by pre-implantation genetic disgnosis and also that can be done by amniocentesis or Chorionic Villus Sampling, to see if the baby is affected. I suggest that you speak to a geneticist, who can do a test run on possible obvious inheritance profile, and advise accordingly. After this, then speak to your Fetal Medicine Specialist Obstetrician

I had a c-section and still suffering from heavy bleeding, what should I do?

Q. Hi, I just wondered if you could help me with something? I Had a c section 5 months ago and was given the pill injection after two weeks after the c section. I’ve been bleeding for 5 months, which only stopped for 3 days in this 5 month period. I then had 2 pill injection from the doctor every 9th week so far to stop the bleeding and it has not worked. I was then given tablets which slowed it down but didn’t stop it. I’m very worried now, I don’t know what’s causing this. Can you help?,

A. Thanks for your question. I think there is some hormonal imbalances or more appropriately hormonal disturbance here. It may stem from how your body tries to adjust to the hormonal changes of after pregnancy, while at the same time, coping with the new hormonal injection. I suggest you speak to your GP, to refer you to a gynaecoloigst. They may wish to do further tests. Take care.

I have experienced discomfort in my bladder region and during sex, is this normal after c-section?

Q. I have had Discomfort and episodes of pain in the region of my bladder/uterus since having my second child by cesarean section one year ago. Recently I had a very painful experience during and following intercourse which I haven’t experienced before, this was 3 days ago and I am still sore. My periods have changed from 28 day regular to 21 day regular and stopping after 3 days. I also have had painful episodes of diarrhoea and variation of back pain, and my lower stomach is still bloated and at times I look as if I am still pregnant. I eat a healthy diet, exercise and keep active. I haven’t seen my GP yet, I dout I would give it time after the surgery but it doesn’t seem to be improving. I this normal after 2 cesarean sections?,

A. Thanks. You should not be incapacitated even after four Caesarean Sections, so my answer is, no it is not normal. You should see your GP as soon as possible – you may need to go back to the local hospital to see a gynaecologist. good luck

I am struggling with a pain in my leg, is due to the C-section I had?

Q. Hi…i gave birth to my first child in april 2011 thru c-section…during recovery after c-section i experienced sudden pain in my left leg when i get up from the bed and try to walk(almost everyday)…it was severe initially and got reduced in around 6 months…i am normal all the time but experience this pain from my buttocks till foot suddenly without my knowledge…something like no strength to keep my foot on the floor only during that pain….i didnt take it seriously since it was occasional…….but now 20 weeks pregnant with my second baby…m worried whether it is becoz of the epidural and wat will happen during the delivery of my second child and whether my pain is permanent or will it get cured..pls advice me
,

A. Thanks. Apologies for the delay in answering your question. There is a possibility that there is a nerve that gets irritated during a chug of position from getting out of bed, after a prolonged petted of rest, and relative stiffness. It’s difficult for me to say it’s due to the epidural, or if you had a spinal block. I suggest you should arrange to see your anaesthetist well before your due date, to discuss what happened last c-section and what is likely to happen during this delivery. You may need to have further tests of nerve function if the problem persists after this pregnancy.

My daughter gave birth 10 weeks ago to a healthy baby

Q. Mr Daniels,
My daughter gave birth 10 weeks ago to a healthy baby girl. There were complications at the birth insofar as the baby was in distress. In addition to the pressence of the Midwife Consultants were present at the birth and I am advised it was a Consultant who delivered the baby. My daughter in the last 48 hours was admitted to A&E at her local Hospital where she has been diagnosed with a Uterine Prolapse with the suggestion being it may have been caused during the childbirth by the use of forceps damaging the uterus. My daughter is now facing surgery, hospitalisation and inability to conduct a normal life for 6 weeks but most upsetting of all the realisation that she will be unable to have a natural birth with any subsequent child. Overcoming the difficulties ids the primary concern however can I seek your opinion as to whether the outline details that I have provided can b attributable to professional error at the time of the birth. ,

A. This is a legal question of professional liability or negligence. I cannot make comments without looking at the evidence. Suffice to say that it can happen, after normal delivery without the use of any instrument. It seems to be a little mor than just “uterine prolapse” though if she is so incapacitated..

Q. Since having a child 5 years ago, I have extremely heavy and painful periods. I feel like I’m coming down with flu before hand and the pain is the same as when I was in labour. Sex is painful, I suffer from pelvic pain and lower back pain. Very tired. My stomach tends to bloat after sex also.
I think my pelvic floor muscles may be damaged, as everything feels a bit dropped.
The second stage of my labour was long, my baby was lying back to back, I had an epidural and forceps.
I have been to my doctor who has given me 3 courses of antibiotics even though she cant find an infection! Please advise! ,

A. Thanks. Do ask your doctor to assess you for possible endometriosis. It may mean your doctor referring you to a gynaecologist for a laparoscopy – camera view of your pelvic structure. Your doctor may of course try some other hormone sto try to stop you from ovulating and see how this affects your symptoms.

Hi I had a vaginal twin delivery at 37 weeks two years

Q. Hi I had a vaginal twin delivery at 37 weeks two years ago, the first twin was delivered with a ventuose as his head was moulded and no amount of pushing would get him out. For some months after the birth I felt I had a very weak pelvis, and if I had wind or tried to go to the loo I would get severe pains similar to the pain of contractions, and was constipated. My Doctor told me that nothing is normal again after having children and was left to it, things all generally settled down and have been fine after losing weight and trying to be healthy but 4 days ago after a sudden upset stomach I have had a persistent pain in my lower stomach, just above my pubic bone, which is worse when lifting, or walking as the pain is more intense, and I am having difficulty going to the toilet again . I am worried about a prolapse as I am only 32 and have scared myself looking at horror stories on the internet! I should also mention I was diagnosed with SPD at 30 weeks pregnant.,

A. Thanks. I think its best to go to your GP who may refer you to a gynecologist to be checked over.

Q. I had some damage during childbirth two years ago, and believe my vaginal (external) could be better enhanced. Is this possible? and how much would the cost of this procedure.

,

A. Thanks. This nature of perineoplasty / vulvoplasty type of surgery should cost £2500 on the average. Do make further enuiries via info@gynecosmetics.com. You certainly need an iniital assessment and discussion on that needs to be done. If you are up to it you could send a coded (non-identifying) photo to the e-mail for initial opinion.

I had a misscarage a month ago and I have a pain in my upper back and my breasts

Q. Dear doctor Joe Daniel, I had a misscarage a month ago and I have a pain in my upper back and my breasts.A milk is coming out of my breast or sometimes a light-brown liquid. Is it possible the reson for that to be the lost of my baby and what could you advise me to do?.I was 12 weeks pregnant.
Thank you very much.,

A. Thanks. I am sorry to hear of your loss. Eventually the milky discharge will stop. You can help by wearing a firm bra, and taking some milk pain-killers, if your breast are sore. If there is any resemblance that the brownish loss is blood from your nipple, then I suggest you see your GP, asap
