Q. I am 24 years old and i started my periods when i was 14. When i was 20 i lost a lot of weight (from 9st 3lb – 6st 7lb) and my body fat % got down to 10%. Pretty much straight away i lost my periods, however, over the last year i have put on enough weight to get my BMI to 18.6 and now have a fat % of around 18% (the last time i checked it although i have put on more weight since then). I am aware that when a womens body fat% gets below a certain percentage (~16%) that they loose there periods, however i am now in the ‘healthy range’ and still haven’t got them back. I have just been for some blood tests and they measured by hormones and they are all normal (some were low when i had them done 3 years ago and was then underweight) but the doctor didnt seem to know what to do next.. I dont smoke, i eat a healthy diet and i dont do an awful lot of exercise (about 30 minutes 3-5 times a week), however, i am doing a Masters degree at the moment and so have been under a lot of pressure. Can you tell me either what you think my next step should be or do you think it is simply a case of putting on more weight and hopefully soon they will come back? I have asked to go for a DEXA bone scan as i am aware that i am at risk of osteoporosis, however i am also very concerned about my fertility long term.,

Q. I have a swollen abdomen, with pains and a lower back pain. I have a persistent cough and am tierd all the time. I also have spells of dizziness and nausea.
Results of blood tests and x ray of chest have come back normal.
In the past I have had ovarian cysts which dispersed, during menstration. I am now 55 and have not had period for over 4 years.
My mother had breast cancer and died when she was 48.
Should I insist on an ultrasound of go private to see a gynecologist?

Q. I have been diagnosed with PCOS but I still get my period every month. The problem I have is that I bleed between periods (it usually starts about 4-7 days after my period ans lasts a couple weeks) sometimes its light other times it can get quite heavy. The colour varies between light brown, pink and red. I also get light pains when this happens. My question is can this have something to do with the PCOS or is it much serious?
