Adenomyosis
Adenomyosis is the term given to the condition involving part of the lining of the uterus being found in the layer of muscle in the uterus. It is not certain what causes this condition, but it can result in a number of menstrual disorders.
The lining of the uterus is called the endometrium. It is a soft tissue that protects a foetus growing inside. It is possible that a number of causes can result in this layer of tissue being broken, causing the endometrium to come into contact with the myometrium. This is the name given to the muscle in the uterus. This muscle gives the uterus it’s shape, and forms a protective layer. If the endometrium comes into contact with the myometrium, blood and tissue that would normally escape during a woman’s menstrual period will become trapped. This can cause pain, and cause the period to be longer and heavier than normal.
Women complaining of two menstrual disorders may be suffering from adenomyosis. Dysmenorrhoea is the name given to the condition involving women experiencing pain during their menstrual period. Most women will experience this condition, as it is normal for the uterine muscles to contract during menstruation, causing pain. But if this pain is more severe than normal, it may suggest a problem. It could be a result of adenomyosis. Menorrhagia is a condition that involves women experiencing menstrual periods that are longer and heavier than usual. This can be caused by a number of conditions, but if a patient is experiencing it at the same time as dysmenorrhoea, she may be suffering from adenomyosis.
This condition is very similar to endometriosis. It is often difficult for a specialist to distinguish between the two in a lot of patients. The condition may be caused by anything that causes trauma to the lining of the uterus. This can include surgery, pregnancy or invasive methods of abortion. This could potentially tear the endometrium, causing the tissue to come into contact with the myometrium. It has been found that the condition is aggravated by oestrogen. Women who produce large amounts of this hormone, and small amounts of progesterone may be susceptible to this condition.
If not treated, the condition can lead to scarring and discomfort. Progesterone supplements can balance the production of oestrogen, and ease the symptoms of the condition. If the problems persist, a hysterectomy is the only way to completely cure the condition.
